Our site is online......... now what?
You have finally succeeded
in getting yourself or your business on the World Wide Web.
After spending many hours of designing your site yourself,
or hiring someone else to do it for you, you are now ready
to go live with your website. You're proud of your site and
you think that you have something that many others will be
interested in and want to share it; the anticipation and excitement
of having many visitors to your website heightens.
Now what? - Everything You
Ever Wanted To Know About Web Promotion
In this galactic space known
as the World Wide Web, how does one get their website noticed?
Search Engines seem to be the main choice, but stop and think.....how
many sites are you aware of on the internet? Try multiplying
that by 100s or even 1000s! If you have been fortunate enough
to make your way to the top of any one of the major search
engines, you will probably receive a lot of traffic from
that listing. But, even if you have made that milestone,
how much maintenance does it require to stay there?
Here are some areas of website
promotion that I would like to discuss further. Each one has
its own merits, but knowing the how's and why's of each one
is very important:
Are you using great meta
keywords??
"Target the wrong keywords and all your efforts will be in vain." After
researching your meta keywords and adding them to your pages, be sure to submit
your pages to the search engines. Even if you've already submitted your site,
you will want to do it again anytime you make any changes to your meta tags or
changes to the content of your pages. If you update your content regularly, you
may want to invest in a software that can automate the tedious process for you.....

Let's try
a different approach for a minute. How
do YOU find other Web Design sites? Do you
go to the Search Engines to find them? Or,
do you visit graphics groups, forums, chat
rooms, etc., and click on links to visit other
designer's sites? I bet most of you click the
links and "surf the web" from one
graphic design site to another, getting ideas,
inspirations, following up on what others are
doing, what's new..... Am I right? Truth
be known, I bet most people that search out
web designers (those without a personal referral),
surf the design sites going from one to another
until they find a site that they find attractive
(everyone has their own taste in web design,
too). This is true for
any subject on the World Wide Web. Most surfers
tend to surf specific sites looking for links
to other sites within the same category, even
if they use search engines to find the first
site.Next question, then.....How
do you get your link in front of people?
By someone using
your graphics for their site, & linking it
back to your site
By submitting
your site to a "Free For All" list
By utilizing your
link in your email signature
By submitting a
link to your site in forums and chat rooms
How many have tried
banner advertising
Placing classified
ads in the Free Classifieds websites
Join groups, like
Pixelators Anonymous, and have your site listed
Join a "topsites" list,
they are popular now
What is link
popularity? Many search engines now measure
the popularity of your website or domain by the
number of links it has pointing to your website
or domain from other websites. Is it important?
In one word...YES! Read the
following article
by Sumantra Roy about measuring the link popularity
of your site. He will tell you how to find out
the link popularity of your site from all the popular
search engines.
